Green Chilli Chicken Curry....step by step.

Green chilly chicken is a simple and easy chicken curry yet slightly spicy; made with green chilly and a bunch of greens. A perfect side dish for roti/Indian flatbread, bhatura, plain rice, or even just plain bread.

Mint leaves, coriander leaves, and green chillies are the base for this curry and yogurt make the chicken tender and juicy.....lastly,  butter makes it more flavorsome. A very subtle curry with a difference.

This recipe was handed down from my neighbor friend Shini; who is an expert in Malabar cuisine, I made some changes to suit my taste...

An easy and quick green chicken curry...

Author: Nisa Homey.
Ingredients:
Chicken: 500 gms.
Pepper powder: 1 tsp.
Garam masala: 1 tsp.
Turmeric powder: A big fat pinch.
Salt.

To gind:(green paste)
Coriander leaves: 1 bunch.
Mint leaves: 1/2 bunch.
Curry leaves: 2 sprigs.
Green chillies: 10-15 (reduce or decrease according to your taste).
Onion: 1, chopped.
Ginger: 2 1" inch piece.
Garlic: 1 pod.
To saute:
Onion: 1, chopped.
Butter: 1 tbsp.
Curry leaves: 1 sprig.
Curd: 1/2 cup

Method:
Gather all the ingredients for grinding and make the green paste.

Grind it to a coarse paste.

Rub the chicken with pepper powder, garam masala, turmeric powder, and salt.

Add the chicken into a pan, add the green paste and mix it well. Let it sit for about 10 minutes and then cook  it covered till the chicken are tender and nicely cooked.

In an iron kadai or a nonstic pan, heat 1 tbsp butter....yes you heard me right...its good old butter for this curry, yet if you are wary of butter use half and half (oil-butter).

Add the chopped onions and curry leaves. You do not need to brown the onions....just lightly sauteing them is enough.

Add the cooked green chicken into this....mix well and then add the half cup curd.

And mix well....allow it to simmer for sometime and let the curry becomes a bit dry.

Serve with rice, roti.

  15. I made this recipe yesterday and it turned out yummy. The taste was good but there are some things I want to ask. The taste of green chilies wasn't strong enough as I expected. I added 11 green chilies, may be I have to add more the next time. Secondly the chicken wasn't very tender and juicy. In fact it was somehow hard, even after cooking it covered for about 15 mins. How much time do you recommend for the chicken to cook covered in order to make it very soft ?
And...your blog is awesome ! Loved all the recipes , ll try that butter chicken one tomorrow :)

    1. Hello, about your query; the heat of the green chilies differ with variety, so I guess you will have to find out which one works best. There is a trick to make the chicken soft and juicy, instead of adding homemade curd/plain yogurt to the curry; just marinated the chicken with curd....though over night in the refrigerator would be great, if time is less maybe 1 hour would be perfect......also, the chicken will cook fast if marinated with curd. Try this trick and thanks for stopping by with the feedback and lovely inspirations.

Pidiyum Kozhiyum Recipe - How To Make Kerala Style Kozhi Pidi - Kerala Recipes

Pidiyum kozhiyum or kottayam style pidi is a traditional knanaya cuisine ; these rice dumpling have a thick gravy like sauce, unlike the dry versions of Malabar kakka roti or kozhi pidi. Knanaya style pidi is served with varutharacha kozhi curry. Traditionally, pidi is associated with baby shower ie when the daughter-in-law is sent to her parents house for delivery, it is customary for the mother-in-law to make kozhi pidi and we knanaya people still follow these traditions. My main aim is to preserve this recipe; so that the future generations can enjoy this wholesome dish. Pidi is rice dumplings which is simmered in water along with shallots, garlic, curry leaves, and coriander seeds; but I have used coriander powder instead to make the whole process easy. Amma mentioned that if using coriander seeds then; the water used to mix the rice flour should be sieved and that using fresh roasted coriander powder saves time. I have made a video recipe and I hope this you help
