Egg-in-a-Hole....step by step.


Egg in a hole, or Toad in a hole is a treat for kids. Its a kid friendly meal and perfect for fussy little ones. I started making this for my son since he was a toddler and even now he enjoys seeing the egg cooked inside the bread. Sometimes kids can be a little fussy around eggs, I used to include my son also when I am making this.

The dish is bread with an egg in the center, prepared by cutting a circular or square hole in the center of a piece of bread. You just need a bread slice, egg, and a cookie cutter or anything like a steel glass to cut the bread, preferably about 2-inch hole. The bread is placed on a hot pan drizzled with butter or oil and you just have to crack (carefully) an egg into the hole, sprinkle salt and pepper.....if you would like you can flip the bread over, since my son fancy the runny yolk....I am serving sunny side up.

Ingredients:
Bread: 1 slice.
Egg: 1.
Butter or oil: 1 tsp or maybe a little more.
Salt and pepper: As needed.

Method:
Cut the middle of bread with a cookie cutter, I used the rim of a steel glass.


This is perfect.....include your kids in this...they would love to cut out.


Heat a pan (non-stick or skillet), I used my dosa tawa. Add in butter, since I made this for my son, I added  a blob of butter, you can use oil also.


Then place the bread on the butter.


Adjust the heat to medium, and crack an egg carefully into the hole.....as a toddler my son used to love this part....clapping his hands with glee, but now as a 11-year-old, he carefully cracks the egg (with a very serious face) and makes this for himself.....under my supervision ofcourse.....I call him "my little smart chef" :)


Oh before I forgot, if you like the cut piece toasted, just keep it on the side of the pan.....let it stay for 2-3 min on low heat until the eggs are cooked. If you prefer you can cover with a lid to cook the eggs.

Then sprinkle salt.


And pepper.(if you don't like sunny side up, you can flip this over and cook the other side)


And gently slide into a serving plate.

Note: You can use any bread, like brown bread, unsweetened etc

  4. My husband has been making these for years and calls them Toad in a Hole.

    The only difference is that he toast his bread first.

  9. This is one of my favorite quick and easy breakfasts! You cook it just like I do, but I do flip mine over because I like both sides of the bread butter crispy. The trick is not overcooking the egg.
