Kadachakka Kuzhachathu / Kerala Side Dish

kadachakka kuzhachathu

Kadachakka kuzhachathu is nothing but mashed breadfruit mixed with coconut a very vegan and traditional dish of Kerala. Kadachakka is again a backyard fruit, commonly available in Kerala. Jackfruit or chakka is also made the same way. During my childhood, my late grandmother used to make breadfruit chips (kadachakka chips)there was a huge "kadachakka maram" in her backyard and come vacations; we have these yummy chips to munch on.

Breadfruit is mixed with coarsely grinded coconut and lastly seasoned with coconut oil, mustard seeds, chilies, and curry leaves. A very healthy and easy side dish for rice and best to pair with nadan meen curry.

Easy step by step pictures:
Serves: 4
I made with two  breadfruits.

Remove the skin and the stem inside. Cut them into small pieces, wash thoroughly and strain and put into a pressure cooker or a heavy bottomed pan. Add little water and salt....pressure cook for 3 to 4 whistle. Open when the steam is released by itself.

Grated coconut, green chilies, shallots, garlic....and (ofcourse turmeric powder; not in pic) to make the coconut mix.

Grind them coarsely. Open cooker and mash the breadfruit and add in the grinded coconut. Mix well.

Heat a tadka pan with coconut oil, add in mustard seeds, shallots (cheriya ulli), and broken Kashmiri chilies. Pour this over and mix and cover with a lid.
Serve hot.

Pidiyum Kozhiyum Recipe - How To Make Kerala Style Kozhi Pidi - Kerala Recipes

Pidiyum kozhiyum or kottayam style pidi is a traditional knanaya cuisine ; these rice dumpling have a thick gravy like sauce, unlike the dry versions of Malabar kakka roti or kozhi pidi. Knanaya style pidi is served with varutharacha kozhi curry. Traditionally, pidi is associated with baby shower ie when the daughter-in-law is sent to her parents house for delivery, it is customary for the mother-in-law to make kozhi pidi and we knanaya people still follow these traditions. My main aim is to preserve this recipe; so that the future generations can enjoy this wholesome dish. Pidi is rice dumplings which is simmered in water along with shallots, garlic, curry leaves, and coriander seeds; but I have used coriander powder instead to make the whole process easy. Amma mentioned that if using coriander seeds then; the water used to mix the rice flour should be sieved and that using fresh roasted coriander powder saves time. I have made a video recipe and I hope this you help
