how to make golden milk

Turmeric milk recipe: Golden milk is popular in the West and it is nothing but our good old turmeric milk which is more commonly known as haldi doodh.  Turmeric milk for kids. Turmeric for weight loss? Lose weight with turmeric? Turmeric is now the super food everybody is searching for. It seems starbucks starting selling it as "golden milk" and they even have golden milk latte and fraps!

Turmeric is one spice which we Indians cannot do with out and I am sure not a single Indian kitchen lives without it. We grew up on turmeric milk which our grannies used to say as "haldi doodh". And I know most of you may even have a faint memory of drinking it at one point in your childhood, especially if you live in India.

So what is the big thing about turmeric now? why is it suddenly on the health food shelves? why is turmeric the most search word on google?

Turmeric is referred as the "queen of spices" because of its many health benefits. It has been used in India for thousand of years as a remedy for cold and flus and is an active ingredient in Ayurvedic remedies.

It has both anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties. It is used to relieve swelling, joint pains and also has anti-bacterial properties when applied to small cuts and wounds.

Turmeric is a "natural detoxifier", it helps to detoxify the liver, helps to break down abdominal fat cells and helps in weight - loss, fights depression, prevents cancer, heart burn etc....

The main ingredient of turmeric is curcumin and it is very effective in relieving joint pain, muscle pain, swelling associated with various forms of arthritis.  Having turmeric will help to manage arthritis pain and stiffness.

Turmeric is 5-6 times stronger than vitamin C & E and hence it boost immune system.

Turmeric helps to melt stubborn belly fat by increasing the flow of bile in the stomach which helps to break down fat that cause you to gain weight.

Having said all the goodness, it is important to note that to get turmeric absorbed faster into the body you need to have a fat pinch of pepper along with it as pepper is one ingredient that helps to absorb the turmeric faster.

Check out my video on how to make golden milk a.k.a turmeric milk for more health benefits of turmeric and how to make turmeric milk at home.

If you are a regular reader, then you might have noticed that I always use turmeric in my curries and dishes and sometimes I even say that I add turmeric purely because of its health benefits.

Try to include this wonderful spice in your daily life and reap its benefits but make sure you use good quality turmeric.

Also, note that if you are making with fresh turmeric root then you need to boil it along with the milk for the curcumin to be activated. Turmeric powder gives more heat to the body than fresh ones.

So enjoy a glass of turmeric milk and sleep better and get good complexion.

Back in the 80's amma started making puffs at home; which my two brothers and myself used to enjoy a lot. She mostly used to make this for special occasions; like when a friend dropped in or when we long for something bakery style.

Fast-forward to 2014; my daughter, Nidhi loves puffs and I have been asking amma to teach me how to make and somehow things did not work out when I last visited her. Right now she is visiting us here in Calicut and I coaxed and buttered her to show me how to make puffs.

Vattayappam is Kerala's own fermented SteamedRice Cake. One of the healthiest traditional tea time snack with almost no oil. It is popular in the Christian communities of Kerala, though not much popular in North Kerala/ Malabar.

"Vatta" means "round" ......vattayappam is basically rice and coconut grinded together and fermented with yeast....it is very soft and pillowy.....a slightly sweet snack......these days, it has found its place in bakeries especially in Kochi and Kottayam...and when I got a request from an anonymous reader asking for vattayappam recipe...I thought of sharing the recipe...as it is very easy to make...and does not take much time to make. I usually make it as an after school snack as it is very healthy and filling for kids.
